Our Pinewood Derby this year was spear-headed by Kyle. Our ward, Plano 7th, combines with the Plano 5th ward and in the past the weigh-ins and the racing have taken place on the same night. Kyle organized things differently and the weigh-ins were on Wednesday night and the racing on Thursday. Kyle got things started off on Wednesday.
We had plenty of help which was great because we had plenty of
boys. Several fathers and mothers came to help add or subtract weight and to put finishing touches on designs.
Whatever this machine is, it was put to great use. Doesn't it just look like the kind of toy needed to make a great pinewood derby car?
As you can see, this is some sort of torture device to make the cars agree to go fast. Just don't drill to far down or the Webleos book gets it too.
Kyle is drilling away on Jacob's car. It was a stubborn little bugger and needed some extra attention. It refused to weigh in correctly and we couldn't have that.

Thursday night found everyone ready to go. The scouts took their places next to the track and Jacob and his friend Brandon (the red-head sitting next to him) made sure to sit at the end of the track so they could keep track of the scoring on the computer screen set up right behind the chairs. Do we take this seriously or what?
Everyone raced well and had a good time but in the end there can only be three winners. James (in the middle) won first place over all, Ilan (to the left) won second place and Jacob won third. Sam won first over all in the Wolf division and received a blue ribbon but was kind of sad that he didn't get a trophy like his brother so he wouldn't let me take his picture.

Sam's car had, of course, a Star Wars theme. It was called the "Planet Avenger." He thought about gluing a Millenium Falcon on top so it would look like it was swooping in to save the planets he painted on the car.

(Can anyone tell me what I'm possibly doing wrong to make my pictures disappear? I don't get it. And is there an undo button that I'm missing?)

And the streak continues. Congrats to Jake and Sam. I am positive that if the cars were cut out in my playhouse, they would have finished first. Be careful of the delete and backspace keys at the end or beginning of a sentence.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's the delete key...it makes things...well...delete. I loved how excited Sam got -checking the projector screen to double check the results haha. Kyle was awesome and made the whole thing a success. Can you ask him if we can ditch the whole checkerboard bandanas thing next year? So gay.
ReplyDeleteI loved that post. David and I were wolf den leaders for a while before we had kids. We had fun with the p derby and it was fun to see this one!

Oh, the Pinewood Derby. Such a funny tradition. We had one in my single's ward back in the day. Some girl who had no idea about how to engineer the car to go faster won with a hot pink Barbie car she made. The men's egos did not take this win lightly. :)
ReplyDeleteWe are very excited to do the Pinewood Derby this year - an official Pinewood Derby. I'm interested to see how Mark (oh, I mean Spencer)will try to make the car fast within regulation. It's fun to see pictures of your family! Our memories of how you look are of when we saw you last, so it's always a bit of a surprise when the kids look older. You however look younger ;)!
