This past Thursday, we discovered that sometime during the night, a part of our backyard fence had blown down. This was puzzling because the wind was only a light breeze which gives a good idea of the state of our fence. On Saturday, Kyle and I went to Homedepot and came home with enough lumber and supplies to rebuild two fence panels.
The first thing we needed to do was pull out all the old nails. The old fence posts were still good, which was nice because those would have been a bear to replace. The kids complained at first but once they got going, they started to enjoy the work. With a family work project you can either cry and complain or you can laugh and have a good time. It was a beautiful day and a perfect one for our project.
Kyle began with putting up the cross boards with the drill. He gave the drill over to Jacob who was a bit too short to get the leverage he needed but with Kyle's encouragement he got it done and did a good job,too.
Kyle gave a quick lesson on how to hold and handle a hammer. He had each kid do one board to get an idea of what he wanted them to do. Analee had a hard time with her first nails but didn't complain.
Sam was a fantastic worker. He was very eager to do everything that was asked of him. He got the hang of things pretty quickly.
Look at my happy working crew. All we need is a happy working song.
Ooh, lookin' good. The fence is looking good, too.
Kyle put one nail in the top and bottom of each board and let the kids finish. They did a good job with the work and their attitudes. It turned out to be a good time for all of us. We will need to replace the whole fence. Now that the kids know how to help and have fun doing it, the work shouldn't take too long.
Oh, there I am. Fortunately, I have a wonderful father who taught me how to use a hammer so I was good to go.
The finished product. Just imagine a whole, completely new fence, stained and treated and ready for the weather. A Winkel Family triumph. Definately good times.
